Across the Caribbean and South Florida, coastal urban and natural ecosystems are experiencing increased flooding due to sea level rise and an increase in rainfall. Increased density and population in coastal areas, salt-water intrusion into aquifers, sea level rise, warmer waters, as well as frequent and more intense hurricanes across the entire region are transforming these landscapes. Natural defense systems, such as coral reefs, mangroves, and marshes can attenuate flood risks, but the outlook for several of these natural features is increasingly uncertain. Presentation and papers are encouraged to address how these natural or enhanced features can be buttressed, and how they can better protect urban contexts and rural areas. Explorations into the potential economic impacts within the region of actions and inactions are encouraged, as are investigations into the social and attitudinal structures that are in place, the role of communication, and how these may need to or are already evolving.
